Economies of Scale

A salmon may lose a single scale
and be none the worse for her ordeal.
Yet, flayed, she expires.

A forest may lose a single tree;
new seedlings sprout to take its place.
Yet, bulldozed, an ecosystem vanishes.

A man may lose a single dream
and find a worthwhile, happy life.
Yet, all his hopes destroyed, humanity is lost.
