Orwell Probably Predicted the Dodgy Dossier

NaPoWriMo prompts mentioned a sonnet for the 14th. I haven’t been following the prompts but I do like sonnets.

Orwell Probably Predicted the Dodgy Dossier

Crises call forth the best amongst us
to fill the breach or plug the dyke;
in times of need we’ll acquiesce
with leadership we may not like.
‘Tis necessary, goes the cry,
to shepherd us to better times.
(By the way, if you don’t comply
you’ll be blamed for sundry crimes.)
A crisis needs a stronger fist;
conversely, leaders who aspire
to power often court a crisis –
some evil empire’s what’s required
to justify arrests and armed police
in modern lands where war is peace.
